I did some reorganizing of the pages on this site due to the amount of stuff that's accumulating and also so that google can index it better. Mainly, I had to split the New Orleans band page in half because it got too large, I added flyer lists so that the flyer details will get indexed by search engines, and I added indexes for the clubs and venues in different towns. Here's a rundown of the main pages.

The band index pages have been updated and should be mostly functional. Getting the NOLA pages fixed was a bear. There are still some dead links on the NOLA and BR pages.

Ok, I've been slacking again, but the site has been updated with a bunch of info that various folks have been kind enough to send in.

Ron from Disappointed Parents sent in their myspace page. They're currently looking for a drummer.

John V sent in info on Stephie and The White Sox, The Plague, Sx Tension, Voodoo Parade, and Graveyard Rodeo. Stephie and The White Sox are doing a reunion show June 21st at Hi Ho Lounge along with legendary singer Dave Turgen from The Sluts. He also sent a cool photo of Stephie and he from 2007.

Sean Morrogh sent in info on No More Fun and Master Sleestak and The Power Crystals. Master Sleestak opened for Alice Donut at The Bayou in Lafayette back in 1992. That was an awesome show. No More Fun featured Danny Hall's cousin and skateboard legend George Brown on drums.

Douglas D sent in info on The Backbeats, Apt. B, The Limit, and The Normals. The Backbeats and Apt. B featured Vance Degeneres of The Daily Show fame. The info has been added to the New Orleans band page. Actually, the New Orleans page got so large I had to split it in half. Now there is a page for New Orleans bands A-M and a page for New Orleans bands N-Z.

Danny Dickson sent in info on Star, Nova, The Models, and Human Drama. See the New Orleans pages for info on these bands.

Steve Kerin sent in an awesome photo of Havoc from 1987. That's Mitch Reed to the right, back before he was a local fiddle master. He was a hell of a bass player. He and I both used to take jazz lessons from a weird boat captain dude. Steve also played with Smaug, Megatron Jones, and Black Bayou Construktion, among others. Scott olivier now lives in Austin last I heard. Here is his site.

Skip Bolen sent in info on The Front. The Front featured Carlos Boll of The Skinnies. I also think he owned 'Lectric Eye Records, which was one of the original New Orleans punk labels. I'm not sure if The Front was before or after the Skinnies.

Troy sent in info on Gangster, Hoax, Latem Yvaeh, Paragon, Warlock, Tolerance, and Hostage. I remember seeing Gangster on the roof of The Keg at Mardi Gras. Aw what!

The New Orleans and Baton Rouge band index pages are fixed and the flyers and photos are back up. Some of the links to external sites are still dead and I'm working on weeding those out. Also, I've started adding the info that people have sent in by email. Again, I appreciate the info from everyone, and apologize for being such a slacker. Anyway, here are the updated pages:

For flyers and photos, I definitely prefer the gallery pages over the old directory listing like at Ripway. I's nice to be able to flip through them. The Baton Rouge pages are pretty bare as far as info, flyers, or photos, so if anyone has anything to add, please shoot me an email. I have some stuff to add from old emails, but not that much. Quite a bit of stuff for Lafayette and New Orleans though.

Does anyone know if this flyer is for the RIP from Lafayette? The flyer is from New Orleans. The Dungeons and Dragons illustration is awesome. I love it.

Ok, so I admit it. I've been a douche and neglected this site for over a year and a half. In my defense, I've had a lot of stuff to take care of, but honestly a large part of it has been due to laziness. Several of the hosting accounts where stuff was stored have been cancelled or disappeared, so there are lots of dead links. Most notably, Ripway cancelled my account due to inactivity, and that killed all the flyer links. Also, the band photos sections have been screwed because the Image Cave account is disabled and Yahoo killed Yahoo Photos.

Anyway, I finally got off my ass and fixed at least the Lafayette section of the material. What I'm working on right now is getting the material organized so that I can load it all onto one account rather than spreading it all over the place. The Lafayette stuff is pretty much done. I've got about 2 years worth of emailed info to add to the archive once I get the files straightened out. Thanks to everyone who has been sending in info. I appreciate it.

I'm going to fix the New Orleans and Baton Rouge sections next, so that all of the current links work, and then I will add the new info that everyone sent in to all three sections. (New Orleans and Baton Rouge sections are still currently dead link central though.)

Two tracks by Three

I added two tracks of the soothing hippyfied sounds of Three to the old local band mp3 page. Three was Scotty Morris, Joe Whitaker, and Matt Gautreaux in his pre-Santeria/Jah One days. These songs are from their self-titled self-released cassette which features cover art by Aletha Jolivette. I know Scotty's doing carpentry, anybody know what Joe or Matt are up to?

Map of Lafayette from the 1950's

I scanned an old map of Lafayette from the 1950's and put it here. Click on a section of the map to see that quadrant in a larger view. There's also a 1.1 Meg version of the whole map.

It's interesting because it's from before most of the road improvements were made and you can see how the street layout used to be. You can also see a few things that aren't there anymore like the Southern Pacific yards and an airport on N. University. Plus you can see how modifications to other streets affected the importance of others. Simcoe, N Pierce, and St. John are just kind of relegated to being ghetto streets now, but they used to be major. Same thing with General Mouton. Anyway, it's pretty interesting to check out.

Brooklyn music scene

I've been trying to check out as many bands as I can either online or live when they play here. Actually, I've been too broke to check out many of them live, but there are a couple of good weekly free shows I've been checking out, and a few are bands we've played with somewhere. Anyway, it's a complete pain in the ass to find the good bands here because there are so many shitty ones. It's kind of like the time your great dane swallowed your girlfriend's favorite earrings: you know there's something good in there somewhere, but you have to dig through a load of crap.

So with that in mind, here are 40 of the good ones that I've found. Mostly local stuff, but also some out-of-town bands that have played here. Of course, if your musical taste isn't ballpark of what mine is, you may think they all suck, but there's probably at least a few you will like. I always like hearing good new music, so hopefully you'll enjoy these. Maybe you peeps can keep me informed as to some of the good bands wherever you're at.

Pink Panther skatepark

I found this Pigmy Skates page with some nice photos from the abandoned (and now destroyed) Pink Panther skatepark outside of Slidell. The Pink Panther was a 1970's era concrete skatepark located off of I-12 at the Pink Panther trailer park. I was lucky enough to go skate it once with Mike Smiley in the mid 90's. It was abandoned then, and we eventually got chased off by a sheriff. It has since been bulldozed. Anyway, it featured lots of banks, a snakerun that emptied into a bowl (that was full of water), a snakerun with a huge transitional wall, and some volcano / hip type things. Check out the Pigmy Skates page for a lot more photos of the park.

Here are a few shots of Mr. Smiling Michael at the Pink Panther. Hopefully, someday photos of the park when it was actually open in the 70's will surface.

Pigmy Skates also has a page on Houma's Paisley Fart Ditch, which was apparently the equivalent of Lafayette's Greenbriar Ditch. That is, a ditch that was fairly lame, but since it was the only one around, everyone still went there to skate it all the time.

I remember when we used to skate that little stupid Hub City Ford ditch or that one in between the two sides of the Thruway... then I took a roadtrip out to Albuquerque and skated the ditches out there. They were like works of art, perfectly transitional, hips, spines, roll-ins, you name it. Lafayette ditches were never the same again. Speaking of Greenbriar, here's a photo that I got from Beth Blackburn of Jerry Guillory standing in the middle of Greenbriar Ditch.

Also, here's one of somebody skating the Catfish Banks in Baton Rouge that I found somewhere. Damn, I miss that place.

Bobbo

I found a couple of references to a Baton Rouge band called Bobbo. Apparently they were circa 1984ish. Anybody ever heard of them? One of the members was Tim Prudhomme, who is now on Smells Like Records, which is Steve Shelley's label (Sonic Youth's drummer.) Anyway, there's a brief mention in this interview and quite a bit of info in this Gambit article. They sound like they're worth checking out. I would have thought being from B.R. they would have mentioned The Zoomers, Shitdogs, US Times, etc. They sound like they were more new wave than punk maybe. I did find the reference about The Replacements playing in Lafayette interesting. Where and when was that? Jenkins, Chris, Mcbane, school me please.

There is also mention of several other B.R. bands on this Cap'n Ken post about Dash Rip Rock, namely The Times, Harry Dog and The Fleas, The Shitdogs, Bobbo, Scooter and The Mopeds, and The Human Rayz. Anybody ever heard of Scooter and the Mopeds or Harry Dog and the Fleas? I need to be more proactive trying to find this stuff out.

Andrew Duplantis and Scott Olivier

Jon found this: andrewduplantis.com . Not much to the site, except for this order page which has some info and two sample tracks. Andrew Duplantis is from Lafayette and was in Stan Brundy Function, and I think maybe One Hand Clapping? He moved to Austin and ended up playing with a ton of big name musicians like Bob Mould, the Meat Puppets, Alejandro Escovedo, Richard Buckner, and Son Volt. Alas, if only he had stayed in town, he would be Lafayette's greatest band heaux. He's definitely Lafayette's most successful band heaux. I like both of the tracks.

I found this: casadistortion.com . It's Scott Olivier's site. He was in One Hand Clapping and Blind Cavefish. I guess he's recording and mastering these days. Again not much to the site, but he's apparently got an impressive collection of gear. He's also got this movie of all of his stuff. Yes, I realize that's pretty nerdy, but as a fellow amp aficianado, it looks like something dumb I would do. My favorite memory of Scott was when he sawed out the wall at his mom's house so he could put a plexiglass window between his bedroom and the closet, which was then made into the "control room."

I also remember him running with a guy we called "Shirtless." He was a fairly big dude with a mullet and a moustache who every day after school would pull off his shirt as soon as he got in the parking lot, get in his old Mustang and peel out. Anybody remember his name? I thought it was Scott Bordelon, but I just looked in the yearbook and I don't see him. I wonder what he's doing now. I'll have to ask Colby.

All this talk of Stan Brundy Function calls for bringing out the old trusty photo of fellow Brundian Andre Bienvenue. Huzzah!

Civil rights photos, and stuff from Lafayette's racist past

I recently saw these newly unearthed civil rights era photos, and they are amazing. They're all from the Birmingham, AL area from the late 50's to about 1965.

This is Rev. Fred Shuttleworth being blocked from entering the whites-only room at the bus station. That dude is such a badass! They bombed his house, they bombed the bus he was on, beat him, arrested him, yet he never backed off.

Talk about not having the law on your side. This is the Alabama State Police in 1965. The white mobs in the photos look absolutely EVIL.

You should check out the rest of the photos on that site. They will make you realize how different things were back then and how little we, as young'uns born later, really understand the magnitude of the changes. They got me thinking about what Lafayette would have been like back then. I mean, I know it would have been segregated, but was this kind of crazy stuff going on in Lafayette back then too? It would be very interesting to see photos from then.

Anyway, here are a couple of things that I've been meaning to scan and post for a while. They're interesting for their racism. Nothing as crazy as those Birmingham photos, but still interesting because of the Lafayette connection.

This is a receipt from Buquor's Cleaners from 1943. At first glance, not too much out of the ordinary, except that the prices are really cheap. However, look closely at the bottom. I won't spoil it, just click on the photo to enlarge and check it out. What the fuck, we were in the middle of the largest war in history and black people were fighting for America just like white people. And the owners apparently felt it was important enough to print shit like this on their receipts. Fuck Buquor's. I wonder how many freshly cleaned white robes they had hanging up behind the counter.

I found this in my old house. It's a Valentine's card. It's crazy to think that this kind of bullshit was at one time considered perfectly acceptable.

These are from an old map of Lafayette. I can't find a date on it, but judging from the cars in the cover photo, I'm guessing either late 50's or early 60's. It's weird seeing all of these sites marked as "colored" on the map. Holy Rosary is on Carmel Ave. and is now abandoned. It's a cool place to explore if you're into that sort of thing. The colored park is Heymann Park off of Surrey by the airport.

I found it interesting that even the housing projects were segregated. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but it seems strange. The colored project is the one that's on Simcoe between Louisiana and Pinhook. It's a real shithole these days. (If you ever need some ghetto drugs though, just drive down Simcoe past the entrance, go about a block, turn around in a driveway so the local dealers can see you, and head back to the entrance. Found that out while looking for my dog.) The white project is the one that's across from the post office on Moss Street by the tracks and the golf course.

Well, I think that's enough racism for today.

The Pussycat Lounge

I've been probably a little over-focused on the fate of the old Pussycat lately. (Especially considering that the fate of Grant Street is still not totally certain, and it's by far much more important musically to Lafayette.) It's just that it, along with Metropolis and the Loose Caboose, was one of my favorite Lafayette clubs. I loved the complete do-it-yourself primitive lawless pirate bar aspect of it. I was (at least in theory) Bernard's partner in it, so it kind of bums me out to see the old girl in such a sorry state. These blog entries are readily searchable on all the search engines, so consider this entry an attempt to write down some of the info about the club for posterity. From looking at it, I can't imagine that it will be around much longer.

Here's the future Pussycat seen in 1981 (from Lafayette LINC.) Even then, the building was looking past its prime. It probably dates from the early 1900's. I was told that it had at one time been a warehouse for Sears & Roebuck. From looking at the inside construction of the building, we could tell that the center part of the front facade (roughly the part directly below the raised part that says Broussard's in the above picture) had originally been open and was a loading dock that went back to two big old wooden doors that could be raised or lowered via large pullies up in the ceiling. Just across Jefferson at that time would have been the edge of the old Southern Pacific railyard, and directly behind the Pussycat there is still an old delivery track that was used to load and unload railroad cars into the building. That track then continued across the alley and then across 3rd Street. It eventually became part of Broussard's Feed and Seed, which also owned the elevators across the alley, the building directly behind the Pussycat (now torn down), and the building that Labor Ready was in. From the above photo, it's apparent that the building didn't change much from the 1950's until Hurricane Rita.

Here's the front of the building now (from Jon J.) Rita collapsed almost the entire front facade of the building. Really, the facade was one of the most important parts of the building's character. In the early 1980's, it had been used as a set for the movie Southern Comfort and had been transformed into a stripclub called The Pussycat Lounge. The front was adorned with that name plus some paintings of risque ladies. After the movie, the facade was painted over, but over time the old movie paintjob started to show through again, thus inspiring Bernard with the name.

After the demise of Metropolis, there was a period where there really wasn't any live music venue that was filling the void that it had left. Grant Street only did big acts, and most of the time it was stuff for an older crowd, and all of the other places only had bands occasionally. Bernard hooked up the Feed and Seed building for ridiculously cheap (I think it was $300 a month), and started trying to get it set up for shows. The space was only slightly smaller than Grant Street, although in very rough shape. Keep in mind that this was before downtown's renaissance, so the area around there was still a little shady.

Aided by prehistoric wiring and an unlocked disconnect box behind the old elevators, we were able to covertly reconnect the building's power and essentially got electricity courtesy of Labor Ready. The warehouse had also been equipped with an ancient sprinkler system from its fertilizer storage days. It was fed unmetered directly off of a city water main. Dana and I managed to disconnect the bathroom from the old metered water lines and connect it into the unmetered sprinkler system. If only the sewer line had been functional we would have had completely free utilities (as long as we didn't get busted by inspectors.) Alas, it had been severed when B's Lounge was built next door (in the 60's?) The Pussycat had a big huge open space in the back with a smaller lowered area in the front where the old loading dock had been, and a small room off to one side of that.

The above two photos were taken by the Poster Children when they played the place in 1999. See their tour log here, where Rose gives it a fairly high review. Some of the other acts that played there were Trans Am, The Fucking Champs, Circus Ridickuless, arguably the best Frigg show ever, Urbosleeks, Santeria, and Roads to Space Travel.

Here's the same window from the Poster Children photo (courtesy of Kristie Cornell, notice that the sign originally said ENTAR). If I remember correctly, it was this wall that Bernard was tossing some smartass punk up against because he was punching dents in the tin sides of the building. B threw him around like he was a rag doll. Bernard's a big boy.

Here you're looking at the crumbled remains of the O and the U in "Broussard's" (courtesy of Kristie Cornell). Ah the memories of that place... drunken coonasses, Fruge eating a bunch of angel trumpet and turning into some sort of garden gnome creature, Bernard going on an acid induced freakout and not showing up for a show, undercover cops showing up and Bernard calling them out, etc. Basically it was like being a kid again, but on drugs and having the world's largest clubhouse.

There are still several old graffiti pieces inside (again from Kristie Cornell). I think at least one of them was done by Dana. A pretty funny story:

Dana and I were working on trying to rig the ancient bathroom in the building to work off of the equally ancient sprinkler system. There was a sprinkler nozzle in the bathroom, and we found where the main cutoff valve was for the entire building and turned it off. After considerable struggle, we finally got the rusty plug off below the sprinkler nozzle and rigged an adapter and some pvc to run water down into the old bathroom pipes. We turned the main valve back on and got nothing. We checked the entire system out and couldn't find anywhere where it had been disconnected.

So here's the picture: I'm standing on a ladder looking up into the open sprinkler pipe trying to figure out why we're not getting any water, and Dana is standing on the ground between the ladder and the door. I ask him to hand me something to stick into it to make sure it's not clogged. Unbeknownst to us, it is, and we've left the main valve on, which leads directly into city mains, so we've got muy mucho pressure on the other side. He hands me a tube of lipstick that had been left behind in the bathroom at the previous show and I start shoving it into the pipe. Of course, I stick it through the clog, the water releases like a shotgun, the lipstick shoots off never to be found again, fifty years of sediment and built up muck comes shooting out of the pipe at mach 10 coating my face and most of my body in sludge, I fall off the ladder, and Smith does this headfirst aerial leap thing through the door and cuts his shoulder open on the door jamb. Anyway, we got the water turned off and eventually got the bathroom to run off of the sprinklers, but only after learning a valuable lesson: we're idiots.

This is the wall that separated the lowered area where Frigg and Poster Children played from the side room where the equipment and miscellaneous junk was kept (photo from Jon J.) Another story: we changed out the old toilet and set it out back temporarily. The next day we came back and bums had not only filled the toilet with shit (in direct view of Jefferson Street), but had wiped their asses with a pair of pants and left them next to it. Thanks, bums!

This is the design from some Pussycat tshirts we printed. It's an old masonic drawing, and I just removed the masonic compass from the sun and replaced it with a cat. Yeah, I know, not real creative on my part, but it was such a weird cool drawing.

You remember the good old alley (courtesy of Kristie Cornell and Poster Children). It smelled like piss and death. Drunk girls peeing all over the place. Drunk people climbing up the old elevator scaffolding. Somebody told me some chick peed on him from above while he was trying to climb up it once. How many clubs can claim that kind of street cred? It's glorious. Remember that big mysterious tank thing (at the left in the second photo) that always stunk? Bernard said he opened up the side door of the Pussycat one day, and there was a hooker standing next to the tank smoking a cigarette with one leg hiked up on the control box thing while some bum was sliding her the salami, and there were like five more bums lined up waiting their turn. It was apparently payday at Labor Ready.

Well, all I can say is that those were really fun days, and I will be sad to see this building go, if it does indeed go. Viva Pussycat!

I came to a horrifying realization the other day: I know all of the lyrics to "Faithfully" by Journey. I've spent the last several days trying to figure out how this could have happened, and have come to the conclusion that it can only be the result of a sinister conspiracy between Steve Perry, shadowy government figures, and Halliburton.

"Lovin' a music man ain't always what it's supposed to be..."

I never even really pay attention to lyrics, and certainly never went out of my way to learn these. I do admit to owning the record in 7th grade, but in my defense I WAS retarded, and under the corrupting influence of D&D. Why do I have trouble remembering the words to the American anthem or the pledge of allegiance, yet whenever I least expect it, the words to this horrid song come bubbling up out of some dark corner in the back of my brain?

"Restless hearts...sleep alone tonight...."

AHHHH!!! See??? I was coming out of some store the other day and found myself humming the tune. I was trying to figure out why, when it dawned on me that the store had it playing in the background and I didn't even notice. I mean, think about it, how many times has that crap been subliminally pushed into your head against your will by some mega-corporation or stupid commercial. I think it's high time I receive some compensation for the cumulative damage done to my ears and soul by Steve Perry and his shitty music.

"I get the joy of rediscovering you..."

Ughh. That line alone ought to be worth about $10K in pain and suffering. So if anyone wants to join me in this class-action lawsuit (conducted by the law firm of Denny & Denny) let me know. All we'll have to do is present exhibit A in court, which will be their entire discography. By the time we get to "Escape", the judge, jury, and everyone else in the courtroom will be begging for mercy. As an aside, I think plaintiffs born after 1983 should probably be entitled to a larger share of the damages because there's a good chance that they were actually conceived to the song. (Ugh, I would kill myself.)

People, we have to stop this trend now before it's too late. If we wait, the only recourse for the human race may be for our descendents to send back a cybernetic robo-roadie to rub out Steve Perry. Let us not let it come to that, sirs.

You may have seen this Grant Street article from The Ind already, but if not, it's good reading. They really nail the most recent owner Kight. I didn't realize he started cutting out signatures from the backstage area two days after he owned the place. The article is coming from a markedly different perspective than the previous articles about the pending closure.

Check out Nick Pittman's site. He's got a lot of articles on Lafayette bands and whatnot. He's also got a collection of his old articles here. Mostly stuff from The Times, but also some other magazines and papers.

Mean Streek is my new favorite Lafayette band. Why? This picture:
I can't even begin to tell you how awesome that photo is. I do suspect however, that they are blissfully unaware that streek is misspelled in their name, but I forgive them. After all, they have a respectable 10% originals to covers ratio. Also be sure to check out their bios and see if you can figure out which member is the odd man out.

Dale Dolese from One Hand Clapping is now in a band called Grape Ape. I thought he moved to Austin, but I guess he's back in New Orleans now.

Punk / metal karaoke is dead

It's Monday night, and traditionally, at least from my perspective, the only thing usually worth checking out has been punk/metal karaoke at Arlene's Grocery. I know to anyone outside of town, you're thinking, "that sounds fucking retarded." Well, honestly yes, it is, but it goes above and beyond that and actually achieves the status of retardedly awesome. They had a live band that would play your favorite punk or metal hits, the crowd was huge to the point that you could hardly move, and most of the people who got up were die hards who went every week, and frankly were surprisingly good. Ok, I know that karaoke has the stigma of being the most annoying shit on earth, but the scene there was rabid and it made it a pretty exciting event to go see. Plus, it was free, which is a definite perk in NYC. Anyway, the band was great (they're a bunch of band nerds with no attitudes) and the MC was this dude Owen from the UK who was funny as hell. There is actually a documentary about the scene where supposedly you can see footage of Renee's roommate Heather on stage and see the rest of us in the crowd. I've still never seen it.

So my brother was visiting a couple of weeks ago, and I'm relatively broke, so I was trying to find free stuff for us to do and decided that we should go check out punk metal karaoke. About a year or so ago, apparently some drama went down at Arlene's, and the band and Owen, who someone told me was also Arlene's manager, left and went to the Continental. There is now a new band at Arlene's on Mondays. So our plan was to check out the old band at Continental and then go see what the new scene at Arlene's was like. I assumed that the crowd would follow the old band, since it was hard to imagine it being amusing without them or Owen. And I always respected that they had managed to create a scene around something as unlikely as punk karaoke.

On the way, I jokingly said that if nobody was there at Continental we should get the hell out of there before we got attacked by someone trying to get us to sign up on the list to do a song. Yes, I know I'm a hypocrite for bitching about the decline of the scene even though I've never gotten up to sing, but basically I'm a big pussy and everyone who used to get up was really impressive. I was a watcher. We show up, and alas, the club maybe had 25 people in it, half of which were members of the bands that played before and hadn't hauled their equipment out yet. Plus the beers were frigging expensive and the cocktail waitress told me some anal crap about keeping the aisle clear (even though nobody was even there) because I had angled my chair slightly. Overall, a really lame experience.

So we get the hell out of there just as we see someone coming over to accost us to sign up, and head over to Arlene's to check it out. I was thinking that the crowd must have stayed there after the Arlene-Owen breakup, since no one was at the Continental. We walked into what was essentially a frat party. Granted, it had been a long time since I went to go check it out, but apparently punk/metal karaoke turned into freedom rock karaoke. And believe me, one of the greatest things about NYC is the absence of fratboys. If you avoid a few areas around NYU, you can live a completely frat-free existence. Anyway, there is nothing even remotely pleasurable about watching some future family-owned company heir sing a song by Free, Pearl Jam, or McTallica. And even the band is lame. The MC simply yells the equivalent of "WOOOO! Do you guys like to rock?? If you're ready to rock, let me hear you yell WOOOO!!!" (not even Ric Flair style, which would be cool), and the band reminds me of a bunch of roadies finally having their day. "I am so rocking the fuck out of this Alice in Chains song. I am SO getting laid tonight." And sadly, they were probably right, but Jesus F-ing C, who wants to watch SERIOUS karaoke musicians.

So anyway, the point of this ramble is that the era of punk/metal karaoke is sadly over. I saw on the website for the old band that their Feb. 20th show at the Continental will be their last one there. Hopefully, they will be able to establish themselves better at a different club, but I have a feeling that those days are done. Peeps, tip a 40 for punk/metal karaoke.

Japanese dude's zydeco pages

Here's some stuff from Jiro's site. He's a Japanese guy who plays the accordion and visits Lafayette every year to take photos of plate lunches. I admit, I have no idea what he's saying on his site, but he sure packs a lot into his visits. He hits zydeco clubs almost every night and during the day they drive around to all the restaurants and hit the sights. He's got photos from tons of clubs, some of which I've never even heard of. I have to admit, I respect the dude's passion. He comes over from another country, hits all the good clubs, munches all the good food, documents all the stuff I miss about the place now that I'm gone, most of which I never even looked into while I was there. Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees.

I just got these developed. They're from the Captured By Robots show at Tribeca Rock Club on November 18. If you ever get a chance, I highly recommend checking this out. It's a band composed of one guy and a bunch of robots that he built, and that actually play this weird punk/metal Ministry sounding stuff. They were all dressed as Star Trek characters and would insult him and the audience between songs. The big robot (Riker) had levers that would fret the strings, and then some kind of hammer type thing that would strum them. I guess if you passed through a black hole, and came out on the other side in an alternate universe, and went to a suburban alternate universe Chuck E. Cheese, this might be what you would expect to find. Anyway, it was awesome.

This was supposed to be a photo essay on how to convert your mom into a hipster in six easy steps, but as you can see, the experiment was not succesful. I actually converted her into the retarded/ADD kid whose mom drops him off at the skatepark so that she doesn't have to deal with him for the rest of the day. Alas, fashion conversion is not an exact science.

Sounds Below Sea Level update

Ok, exams are done, jury duty is over, visitors are gone, we don't have to move, etc. so it's back to wasting my life on the internet. Here's a quick post about some stuff related to the Sounds Below Sea Level project.

The comp apparently made it to #3 at WNYU (radio station for NYU in Manhattan). This is from an email from the station's music director:
"Just wanted to say thanks for sending the compilation. It actually reached number three on our chart this week! Its definitely a great cause, and we're very happy to be playing it! Cheers."
Here's their chart for Dec. 19th.

Here are a couple of plays (Zydepunks, Normals) from Pat Duncan's Dec. 15th show on WFMU (NYC) and one (Morning 40) from Station Manager Ken's Jan. 4 show. Also, here are some (The Other Planets, Egg Yolk Jubilee, Morning 40) from Liz Berg's Dec. 13th show and her Jan. 17th show.

Here's a review from Jan. 3 in Gambit. It's a little confusing, coming off at first as though they are dissing it, then calling it excellent at the end. Anyway, here is the part about the comp:
"New Orleans Underground: Sounds Below Sea Level (independent) is no more uniform or stellar than New Orleans Will Rise Again, but like the latter album, this CD benefiting Habitat for Humanity and the New Orleans Musicians Clinic shows how different musical trends manifested themselves in New Orleans. While little of the music is distinctive enough to warrant a national audience, everyone represented here certainly deserves an audience of some kind. It's tempting to say that underground rock 'n' roll here has gotten better because the songs by Morning 40 Federation, Zydepunks and Rotary Downs are among the best on this comp, but it may simply be a function of improvements in recording technology. Tracks from 1980 by the Cold, the Normals and Wayward Youth are dated by their productions and jittery, New Wave styles, but as a compilation designed to show outsiders another side of the musical culture that Hurricane Katrina put at risk, it's excellent."
I don't put a lot of weight into their negative take on the older tracks, because those have been among the stuff that has gotten positive remarks from other sources here in NYC (like WNYU and WFMU). I was also surprised to get a message from a Yahoo group called GarageNYC about the comp from someone who had heard about it on a messageboard and was excited.

There is a review planned by Offbeat, and also one planned by The Ind. Also, Leo at Antigravity generously donated ad space for the comp in the January issue. It should be available in New Orleans and Baton Rouge already, but it's not online yet. And I would like to thank The Zydepunks, WWOZ, The Normals (Electric Earl), The Cold (and Three Chord City), Samba Rio (MIB), The Jazz Foundation, Orbis Quintus, and a mysterious porn site for linking to the nolacomp tripod page.

Vintage Lafayette photos

All right, finally a site with historic Lafayette photos. Check out Lafayette LINC's photo section. I could look at this kind of stuff for hours. I had been wondering why none of the Clerk of Court's stuff was scanned on their site, and I guess it was because they're letting these guys do it. Anyway, it's interesting to see all of the buildings and places that are no longer around. They have cool photos of the transit system and of the city in 1981, but the ones from the Clerk of Court collection are the best. Here are a few:

Broussard Feed and Seed building in 1981. That's the old Pussycat Lounge, from before it was used in a movie set (Southern Comfort). Supposedly, that building started out as a warehouse for Sears and Roebuck. The lowered area where Poster Children played was originally the loading dock.

Cool photo of the Jefferson Theater. I'm not totally sure, but I think this was where the parking lot is next to the Gordon Hotel.

I think this is all Teche Drugs and gifts now, but I think it used to have On Time Fashions on the corner.

The area behind the Jefferson Hotel (now elderly apartments) looks completely different.

Buckhorn Bar in the old Gordon Hotel. Last I remember, it was a beauty salon I think.

The website also has various urban development plans. According to the site, there are two approved alignments for I49 through downtown. One is down the existing Evangeline Thrwy alignment, the other will use the old railroad yard property by the old train station. If they use the railroad alignment, the old Pussycat is doomed. Of course if they use the other path, everything between the two sides of the thruway is doomed. A lose-lose situation.

Barry Cowsill's body has been identified in New Orleans. He was the bass player for the Cowsills, an old garage band from Rhode island. He had been missing since the hurricane. Read a little more about it and check out a Cowsills track here.

Cherie Breaux's friends are releasing a movie about Christian Music called Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music. I'm not sure if it's up my alley, but it looks like it might be cool. It's playing here at Upright Citizen's Brigade and in Austin at the Alamo. Cherie moved to Chicago and married one of the guys in The Frames (Rob I think).

Ok, this has nothing to do with Louisiana, but check out this video of all of the mayoral candidates for NYC. Well, almost all of them. The guy we know from Haunted Pussy isn't in it, probably because he was in jail at the time for telling a reporter "he could stab him in the face and people would think he was a hero like Bernie Goetz". Anyway, it's mostly boring bullshit, but check out Jimmy McMillan of the Rent is TOO DAMN HIGH party. He starts at about 19:15, but you should watch the last few seconds of the nerd before him to get the full effect. I like the way they keep bleeping out "damn".

End of the road for Grant Street

I know I'm a little late on this, but I figure I should post some of these articles, now that Grant Street Dancehall is closed. I was talking to Ricardo last night about it, and it made me a little sad, even though I don't live there anymore. It's definitely the best live music space in the city. He said the plan was to tear it down and make a parking lot. Anyone know if that's true? If it is, it will be another in the long succession of Lafayette's atrocities committed on historic buidings. He also said that the last owner cut out and took the panels from the backstage rooms with all the graffiti and signatures. They should be in a Lafayette music museum. One of the articles I read makes it sound like that's not going to happen though, and a group from Cali may re-open it:

Don Kight, of New Iberia, and his legally “silent” partners have signed documentation to sell the Grant Street name, the image and “memorabilia” such as famous, framed photos of blues and rock musicians who have played there to a California-based group of investors.

Battle of the Bands at Bayou Bijou

I converted an old article from The Vermilion about the Battle of the Bands at the Bayou Bijou on October 20, 1995. It was put on by Bernard Pearce and Josef Butts and featured Frigg-a-go-go, Urbosleeks, Three, and Oktober Groundfly. The article is here. It's interesting to read stuff like this now after all this time. Anybody know who Josef Butts was? I was thinking it was Joseph who used to run with Deshazo but that was Eakins.

Why: Don't Ask why we're putting out a promo video for a band that is close to 2 years over....just be glad/irrate that it "IS." In short, the promo's for an indie film with Bigfoot in it. There! Are you happy? Right. The director of the movie put some Santeria music in the film and wanted a video, so Primo & I enlisted the amazing Doug, who buried himself in an enormo-box full of old Santos footage and came out with this video. I think he did a great job, considering the amount of footage he had to go thru...and even then, not even 1/20 of the stuff was used.

Thanks: To all the peoples who came out to shows back then. This is for you as much as us. Dig it. Kind of brings back a lot of memories. Some bad. Most Good. But All of them: IS.

Final Note: Doug still has to do a last filter treatment on the thing, but I'm posting the near-done version now for you to peep. When I figure out how to post the video on the front page or someone ingenius code-geek shows me, I'll put in on the front page of this myspace shit. For now, this is it.

The horrors of Ohio, and other stuff

I'm currently in Ohio visiting my parents. For years, I've been telling people about the horrors of Ohio cuisine. It's a culinary wasteland. Everything has jello or Cool Whip or cabbage in it. Sometimes all three. Anyway, everybody always thinks I'm exaggerating, but now I have proof. My mom was going to the grocery yesterday and asked if I wanted anything. I told her to get some hummus. She couldn't find any at the store, so she decided to make some. Here are the results:

Frigg-a-go-go returns?

Check out Frigg's myspace page which has tracks from their soon to be released super secret rumored only to exist in another dimension long lost ghost ninja record, All That Glitters. Does this mean they're back together? Sounds like a maybe. Check out Nick Pittman's article from The Times. It's about time they resurfaced. I could use a good Frigging. I see from the photo that Chadwick has brought the VH shirt out of retirement... that's a good sign...

Old Lafayette ads

These aren't related to the Lafayette music scene, but if you're a history nerd like myself, you might find them interesting. I always liked to see what the various buildings in town were back in the old days and to see how the city had changed over the years. These are ads from the back of the 1916 SLII (U of L) yearbook. There are quite a few, so you'll have to bear with me.

509 Jefferson is now Teche drugs, and as far as I can remember Moss Pharmacy is still around (corner of Lee and Convent or something?)

I like the ad for the Jefferson theater. That got torn down to make the parking lot next to the Jefferson hotel or whatever it's called (the building that had the Sidebar). Smooth move, Lafayette.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think this house is on N. Orange.

I wonder where Stewart's was. I think the Lafayette Drugstore may have been on Jefferson next to the underpass in that building that was Dot's that got torn down a few years ago. I say this because I was digging around in the rubble after they demolished it and found several old time Lafayette Drugstore bottles.

I think this guy Nickerson may have been the person the Nickerson addition was named after. That neighborhood is considered part of McComb now, but it was originally called the Nickerson Addition and was bordered by Jefferson, Simcoe, and the old railroad yard. I'm not sure where the south end was. My old house on 8th St. is in it.

Lafayette Electric still survives, although it's now on Cameron. I'm glad I wasn't a kid back then. Those clothes are retarded.

I think the house in the photo is either on N. Sterling or N. Orange. It's weird to see these old houses when they were being used as an example of a new home. Bank of Lafayette was bought by Iberia Bank in the early 90's.

Ah, the days when they hadn't finished completely deforesting the Atchafalaya yet.

I can remember Lafayette Wholesale being open on Simcoe next to the tracks. I wonder if they're still there. I never went to it, and feel stupid about that now. An 85 year old grocery, that had to have been cool.

I figure this must have been from their 1996 show at Metropolis. There are a lot more pages to it, but the text is really small and I don't think it would be legible in the scans. The one by my school has laminated articles all over their counter refuting the stuff from "Super Size Me" and other documentaries. They're trying to claim that you can easily lose weight by eating at McDonalds and being active. My McLuvHandles say otherwise.

No, dumbasses, you lose weight by being active and staying as far as humanly possible from McDonalds. If you're going to munch Mickey D's every day, you better be either a marathon runner or bulimic. We, the culinary lazies, just go there because it's cheap and convenient, not because it's good or we think it's good for us. I mean I'm mildly retarded enough to still eat there, but not so much that I'll buy that line of bullshit.

Look at Wendy's. For years their publicity figure was Dave Thomas. "Eat at Wendy's, you too can be a fat guy working at a fast food restaurant until you die from rectal blockage in your 60's." Now, that's corporate honesty.

Ok, I know McDonalds is a pretty easy target to rant on, but would a little corporate honesty kill them?

Disclaimer: I do not know for sure that Dave Thomas died of rectal blockage. He may have in fact been killed by unknown members of the government because HE KNEW TOO MUCH.

Metropolis newsletter

Here are some scans from the Metropolis newsletter from March 1996. I believe this would have been the period when Bernard and Tracy owned the club. It features Liquidrone, Man Or Astroman?, Medeski Martin and Wood, Frigg-a-go-go, Vaudeville, The Dismemberment Plan, Evil Mothers, Geezer Lake, Zeni Geva, Pervis, Weedeater, Burnversion, Sanpakus, Dumpsterjuice, Likehell, and a bunch of other bands. The calendar shows a really strong connection to the NOLA and Baton Rouge scenes at the time. It's a pretty cool snapshot of the Lafayette scene in 1996. It seems like a newsletter like this is a good idea for a club too. If people pick one up on the way out from a show and read about the upcoming stuff, they would be more likely to come out and see those shows. I wonder why more clubs don't do this.

August Spies myspace page

August Spies has a myspace page with mp3s that you can check out. August Spies was an early 90's Lafayette punk/hardcore band with Brandt Ulmer (vocals), Jared Sonnier (bass), Fluid Broussard (drums), and Iggy "Supersex" Hernandez (guitar). They played at a lot of the Milton Civic Center shows. There are a couple of old flyers for those shows here and here (they're on the Hekatomic Cherries site.) Fluid was later in Urbosleeks and is now in Fell To Earth out of New Orleans. Jared is now in Ghidrah. Anyway, it's good to hear these guys again.

Comparison: LSU vs. USL, circa 1920

I've got a 1916 SLII yearbook and a 1922 LSU yearbook. For anyone who doesn't know, UL was originally Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute (SLII), and later became USL, and now UL. (It will always be USL to me dammit, screw that oo-la-la crap.) I was checking them out, and it's funny that in a lot of ways, things haven't changed all that much. Granted, the SLII sophomore class consisted of a whole 18 people, so UL has gotten a bit larger, but the overall vibe about the two schools is still pretty much the same. LSU was very frat-oriented, seems a lot more serious, and was a bunch of football fanatics, although it looks like it had a lot larger military influence ("the olde war skule"). SLII looks like it was pretty laid back, and everybody was more interested in goofing off and having a good time than in their studies (their motto: "To avoid doing today, what can be put off until tomorrow"). For example, LSU had large programs in law and military studies. At SLII, you could major in farm mechanics, stenography, or home economics. Here are some other important comparison categories:

SLII had these guys. Not only do they look ferocious, their record proves it. As you can see, as long as they played high schools, they totally kicked ass.

So if you had gone to SLII back then, my verdict is that your degree probably didn't mean jack shit when you got out, but you probably had a way better time at school. Assuming you didn't impregnate some form of livestock.

Ok, so I've been a slacker of late as far as this site is concerned. I finally got around to scanning a small stack of zines that I got from Scott. So today, we have Rock City News #3, a small Lafayette zine put out by Ronnie Chauvin of Frigg-a-go-go in about 1996. In this issue, we have an interview with Citizen Raul, an interview with Citizen Dexter (?!), some slight trash talking about Dave Hubbell, various gossip, and a crossword puzzle. By the way, I think some of Scott's crossword answers are wrong. (He shouldn't have dropped out of Rock City High.) Speaking of Raul, he was definitely one of Lafayette's characters. Some people loved him, some hated him, but nobody knew his real story. I heard that he moved out to Cali, got sick, and died. I always heard various things about him: that he was from a really rich family, that he was a Catholic priest, that he was an accountant, etc. I thought he was a nice guy, although a little suspicious. Anyway, RIP, Raul if you aren't still around. By the way, there are more scans of zines here.

I got some bad news from a comment on an old post. The Ragin Cajun Johnny Fasullo died Sunday. He hosted a cajun music show on WWOZ. There are obituaries here and here.

Johnny was the best. He played great Cajun music, but what you really listened to his show for was to hear Johnny. Do you remember the coach's assistant on Waterboy that no one could tell what he was saying, and you were thinking, "that's such bullshit, no one down here talks like that." Johnny talked like that. It's weird, he had a totally different accent from what we're used to on the west side of the swamp. He'd be telling the most awesome incomprehensible jokes in between songs and I would always be trying my hardest to remember them so I could bust them out at opportune times later. I always forgot them and wish I had written some down. Pretty much every sentence was interspersed with a "all right nah" or a "hoo wee I tell ya". I also always wanted to make a Johnny Fasullo soundboard but I think that's pretty inappropriate now.

Anyway, R.I.P. Johnny Fasullo, you were the most entertaining person on WWOZ for me. You will be missed. I wonder if Christian or somebody at WWOZ can dig up some clips of Johnny.

Pardon the personal rambling.

Have you ever been stuck on a train or bus or whatever with people who are just too white for their own good? You know, the ones who are talking entirely too loud about trivial shit completely unaware of how annoyingly white they are? (In the voice of Mr. Howell from Gilligan's Island:) "I'm torn between which ringtone I should get... the White Stripes, or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. What do you think?" or "I've been searching all of the Apple stores for a Christmas themed Ipod sock for my pod. It's so frustrating." I was on the subway the other day next to a couple of those. I was thinking to myself, "shutthefuckup shutthefuckup shutthefuckup please god either strike them mute or strike me deaf" when I looked up and noticed that they were both black. Im not sure how to feel about this. On the one hand, I'm glad that they showed me that whiteness isn't necessarily genetic and probably has more to do with how one is raised, giving me hope that one day I will be able to throw off the shackles of my utterly honky upbringing. But on the other hand, I was saddened by the realization that honkiness is apparently contagious. And it's spreading. Someone notify the CDC.What if I'm a carrier? That's a scary thought.

Here's another disturbing event. I was using the pisser at school and some guy came in after me and was about five pissers down. While I was washing my hands, I noticed that he went straight from the urinals to the electric hand dryer. Ugh. Nasty fucker is running around with dried pee crust on his hand. That makes me think about how potentially disgusting shaking someone's hand is. Do you even want to know what that hand has been up to? When you got that promotion at work and shook your boss's hand, you basically shook your boss's balls. When that bum comes up to you at the train station and shakes your hand before he hits you up for "38 cent", you probably just shook pigeon roadkill AND numerous bum balls. And don't even get me started on that time you met Ann Coulter. Come on, people, a little hygiene isn't going to kill you. I at least have the decency to wash my hands after I give a bum a handjob.

The part about CC Adcock is funny as hell. Also check out the latest in his Anatomy of a Scream series. The part with the carny lingo is the shit! On a shitty note, some assholes stole his puppies. Un-fucking-believable.

Vicky at Oddfellows posted some photos and an account of The Psychedelic Furs at Jimmy's in 1982. Cool stuff. Vicky earlier also posted this list of old New Orleans bands.

Bernard Pearce has gotten an artist residency with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council as part of their Gulf Coast Artists Residency program. The program is designed to give displaced artists workspace and a stipend so that they can continue their work here in NYC. His space is in a loft in Tribeca and it is seriously sweet.

Carl added more songs to the Hand Bob the Spoon page. If I'm not mistaken, that's a mohawk sporting Chadwick in one of those photos.

I was looking for references to Slim's Y-Ki-Ki in Lawtell and found this page on Hiram Sampy. That info is from the LSUE music pages which has a lot of info on Cajun and Zydeco artists.

One Man Machine, Die Rotzz, Weekenders

Bernard a.k.a. One Man Machine was up here in September and played at the Brick Theater in Brooklyn. The audience was completely polarized by his performance. Half of them were loving it, and the other half had an expression of complete horror. It was great. He was joined that night by our very own Schickenbutt. Here are some shots:

Treacherous Cretins trainwreck

Since I've been making fun of everybody else so much lately, I guess I should probably post something about my not-so-glorious past accomplishments. I stuck a track from my high school band, The Treacherous Cretins, on my myspace page. We were me, Bob Gardner, Paul Buswell, Kelly Van Eaton, sometimes Eric Johnson, sometimes Cody Bowen, and a few other various singers. We were named after a Frank Zappa song.

Here's a little trivia for you: we were the first Lafayette band to apply the scientific method to the art of sucking. We could not only suck worse than your band, but we could prove it both empirically and mathematically. Anyway, check out the track, it's "My Girl", and has the most awesomely awful guitar solo ever (courtesy of me.) We've got another song called Eric Zone that makes fun of our singer Eric Johnson's cheezy pickup techniques. I put it on the Lafayette mp3 page. It's a total train wreck. Cody is the son of ex-mayor Kenny Bowen. We also briefly had this coonass guy from Cade as our singer. He always wanted to cover Nazareth songs and would bring over his girlfriend (who we affectionately called "the bimbo") with her kid and they would try to get my mom to watch her baby while they went to the mall.

We were previously called something else that I can't remember and had Charles Rees on bass. We did the old faithful weasel technique of breaking the band up, and then reforming the next day without him under a new name. Well, check out our embarrassing past.

On another note, I got an email from Colby Foreman, and he said that Mark Laurent was in a car accident and died. Mark is Mireille Laurent's older brother. Anyway, rest in peace, Mark.

Fiddycentdraft Lafayette band whore awards

Ok, I don't mean groupies who sleep with band members. I mean musicians who were in a zillion bands. A recent post got me thinking about how many frigging bands a lot of the people I knew had been in. Some people seemed like their mission was to join as many bands as possible.

Thusly, I present to you a ranked list of who were the biggest heauxs, at least in the up to about 1999 period. It's based on the Lafayette band page info, which isn't complete, so it's probably not particularly accurate. I expect that there are numerous guys from hardcore bands that could easily top this, especially considering that the usual lifespan of a hardcore band seemed like it was about 2 weeks.

There are the usual suspects, and a few surprises. I had my money on Steve Miller, but he isn't even in the top five. And Deshazo doesn't even make the list?? How can this be? I think Urbosleeks should have been named the Lafayette Band Heaux Allstars. Between the five of them, I count 19 other bands that they were also in. I'm not on the list (I was a wannabe slut.)

The only requirement here is that the ho suspect must have played at least one show with the band under the pretense of actually joining the band (and not just as a guest musician.) Scott Emmer and Brian Fruge top the list as Class 7 Heauxs, with Chris Cart, Jason Robira, and Ricky Williams right behind them at Class 6 heaux-ness. It's a regular band ho photo finish, folks! I expect that new info and litigation could change these results considerably.

This is from the December 1984 Maximum Rocknroll. It's a Louisiana scene report by Chris Cart. It's got a photo of Reality On Trial (maybe at John's?) and a review of a show in Baton Rouge by the LSU campus. Plus some info on clubs and other bands, and an ad for Sorehead Productions. I'll convert the text to HTML so it's easier to read when I get a chance.

This is a another old zine from Monroe called Harsh Reality. I never hear of anything from back then from North Louisiana, but if they had a zine, then there had to be something going on.

Drayton Sawyer photos

These are photos of our friends Drayton Sawyer Gang from the same party as the Stinking Lizaveta shots. (It was in September, just got the film developed.) Suffice it to say, they are LOUD. As in, if they play in a small space, bleeding eardrums loud. Jason (guitar/howling/molester moustache), Lily (bass/keys/outfits), and Ryan (drums/grimacing/Charles Bronson trivia). Jason plays crazy noise guitar reminiscent of sawing through the neck with an electric can opener. (In a good way.) Lily is HOTTT (three t's), like a punk rock barbie doll. I saw them at North Six once when I was really drunk and stoned and she was in this nurse outfit. Gardez donc, ca c'est bon. I partially blame Fruge and his evil potweed for my delinquency. I used to be such a good boy. The drummer Ryan, is Jilbro's main man. He played with Mezzanine C14 for a while and they recorded an album with Bob Weston (Shellac). Anyway, he is high on many things, but life is not one of them. Thai food, early Metallica, and pain killers would be my guess.

Stinking Lizaveta in Brooklyn

Here are some photos of Stinking Lizaveta playing at a rooftop party at a loft in Bushwick. I thought the photos would have come out better with the city in the background but you can barely tell. Ze bummer. Regardless, Lizaveta tore it up. The party was a benefit for New Orleans and had a bunch of bands, graffiti dudes, a kissing booth, a fondling booth, a bunch of dogs, illegal liquor sales, a bunch of drunk underage kids, and no bathroom. Well, I'm not exactly Mr. Myspace or anything, but I was screwing around on it tonight instead of studying and stumbled across Mike Mcbane's page. He also put up a soundclick site for his late 90's Austin band Eureka. Check out what he was doing in his post-Lafayette days. Mike also played with the Blind Cavefish, The Bluerunners, and Full Hank off and on. It's been a while since I've seen Mike, but I've always envisioned that he would be living in some windowless Austin basement surrounded by piles of used vacuum tubes and partially dismantled guitar amps only venturing out at night to get quadruple espressos from some decrepit coffee shop/laundromat. I don't think I was too far off. He's also been posting pictures of his CATS. Even I know that myspace is not the place for photos of your cats.

Here are some standard myspace photo topics:

- making gang signs while showing off your tats and cleavage
- you sitting at your computer in your underwear staring sullenly at something off camera

Ok, maybe I made that last one up. But you get the point. TATS, NOT CATS. Furthermore, he mentions his association with quiz bowl in high school. I don't even really know what the hell that was, but I remember it being pretty much the social equivalent of Off! for the ladies.

Now, as you can see, Jerry Faulk has the right idea. Tats. Unfortunately, he also mentions that his favorite band is Queensryche and his Battlestar Galactica fetish. But then again, we're probably getting to the point where 80's metal is about to be retro cool, so maybe he's on to something.

And Joy Chubb, who I used to have a crush on, is now divorced and posting half naked pictures of her ass-tats. See, that's what the internet was designed for.

I think basically if you can find a way to post a picture of yourself making gang signs while drinking a 40 in your underwear and vintage WASP t-shirt showing off your cleavage tat (that says "LOL") while riding your golden retrievers, you win and the internet starts over.

Here are a few more tips on making the kewlest myspace page ever:
- Try to end every photo description with LOL!!!!!!!!!!! The coolness of anything on the internet is directly proportional to LPP (LOLs per page).
- When listing music influences, be sure to include every band that you've ever heard in your life. If it takes two full screens to scroll past them, then that's about right.
- Include the results from your latest "which Star Wars character am I?" quiz ("I'm C3PO LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!") and for god's sake don't forget to include your hilarious 1000 line chatlogs as your blog entries.
- Make a shitty "thanks 4 the add" thumbnail. Nothing adds that personal touch to a comment quite like a blinking spam gif with a band's website across it.
- Don't forget the background midi!

I finally got around to adding some more music to the mp3 page for Lafayette bands. I've been kind of a slacker about that stuff. The last time I added anything was July. Anyway, there is a Whiskey Dogs song (Dog Day Afternoon), two parts of a Captain Avenger thing from Jay Tray's show on KRVS, and a track by Three Guys Plumbing.

Actually, all of that is from an old tape recorded off of the radio. I was just listening to the Captain Avenger piece and noticed that I lost the left side audio so some of the chicken's lines are missing. I'll re-record it tomorrow and fix it.

The Whiskey Dogs track includes an intro of Jason Trahan talking that I left in because it really highlights his technical prowess. How that boy didn't become a high paid radio personality I'll never understand. He'uns was real perfeshunal. I'm not sure who was in Whiskey Dogs, but I think Jason was.

I believe the Captain Avenger piece was done by Jorge (Jay) Torres. Trahan might have been involved as well. It's about the love between a super-hero and a genetically mutated chicken. Check out the Whiskey Dogs and Captain Avenger tracks here.

I also added "Who Cries For the Pinatas?" to the Three Guys Plumbing page. Three Guys Plumbing was Trahan, Dave Clayton, and Dave Mouton.

Both Jay's were also in Rare Avis, and Jay Trahan was also in Urbosleeks. Jorge was in Oktober Groundfly as well. They're both now in Ceramic Duck in Athens, GA. Oh, and Trahan is also in The Ginger Envelope. Them boys is some band joining machines. Don't even get me started on Steven Miller.

Lastly, here is a little clip of Jason giving away tickets to the Poster Children show at Buck Nutty's. So I guess that dates the tape to 1997. Stephan Williams won the tickets by the way.

Here are some old Tipitina's flyers, I would guess from '77 to the early '80s? They're all from the Tipitina's website. You can check out more flyers here. They say they have all kinds of flyers and materials squirreled away in back rooms, so I hope they continue to put up more stuff. Rumor has it that Grant Street is the same way, so maybe we'll eventually see some of that put up on the web as well.

RZA was a new wave band in New Orleans from the early 80's (maybe even late 70's?) They were featured on the 1980 comp N.O. Questions, N.O. Answers. One of the members, Lenny Zenith, has a page for them here with quite a bit of info. It sounds like they were pretty tight with The Cold. Lenny later moved to NYC and played with Jennifer Convertible and also worked with Loser's Lounge, which is a conglomeration of various musicians doing lounge versions of a selected popular act (Queen, Devo, Sesame Street, etc.) See here. He's now in Michigan and is in Without Misty.

Dege sent in these Santeria flyers. The Hippy Death Cult and Elvis ones are badass! I'm not sure of what years these were from. Late 90's to early 00's (post-Metropolis) is the best I can say. Dege has some Santeria tracks and some of his solo stuff up on his Myspace page. He's also playing with Black Bayou Construktion and C.C. Adcock. As far as the other Santerians, Krishna lives in Florida and either just had or is about to have him a young'un, Jay lives in Queens and manages a clothing store, and Primo is still in La. apparently gardening and watching for UFOs.

This Red Rockers at Tipitina's flyer is from Gigposters. I'm not sure of the year.

Sonic Youth at Howlin' Wolf in 1995. I got this flyer off of the Sonic Youth website.

Jimmy's Mardi Gras and Lil' Queenie and the Percolators at the Saenger Theater. These two flyers are both from 1981. I got them from rhumba.com. The music lineup includes The Sheiks, The Cold, The Meters, The Neville Brothers, and The Wild Tchopitoulas.

This is the artwork from an Elvis Costello bootleg recorded in 1977 half at Jed's in New Orleans and the other half in London. I'm not sure if the photos are from Jed's though.

This Earbleed Fest flyer is from Gigposters.

Nola Underground has a page with a lot of fliers on it. Some are fairly recent (I saw an Icepick Revival one) but there are some vintage hardcore ones like Shellshock and Graveyard Rodeo as well. They aren't individually downloadable though.

New Orleans Underground: Sounds Below Sea Level benefit compilation

We finally got our shit together! The benefit compilation that Schickenbutt and I started working on after Katrina is finally ready. The website for it is here. The money we get from selling them is going to go to Habitat For Humanity and the New Orleans Musicians Clinic. The tracks and layout have been finalized and we've just started making them. I've currently got about 100 burned and about half of those assembled (should have 200 by the weekend.) I also need to say thanks to JB and DJ Sheroq for printing the covers covertly at work. I won't say where that was, but let's just say that one is a supplier of ladies unmentionables to Walmart and the other is a well known fashion company. It's about time that mega-fashion corporations did something more socially significant than feeding cocaine to scrawny models and supplying WWF boxers to Wally World. So anyway, thanks unknowing corporate benefactors! We'll be at an open house for the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council this weekend selling them. The rest we're going to start putting in stores around town and sending some to the bands and radio stations. We're updating the nolacomp site with all of the info about locations. Schickenbutt also set us up to sell them online through paypal. So we rollin now, son. You might even say we got us a convoy.

Check out Poche's website. At least as of when I moved away, Poche's was the reigning champion of plate lunches. Big ass plates of food served to you by old coonass ladies who were so real deal you couldn't even tell what they were saying sometimes. Also, check out their movie page. At least watch the welcome message one. Ol' Floyd is quite a charmer! The boudin making contraption on the boudin video is pretty insane. And the turkey one is enough to give a vegetarian nightmares for a year.

I was hoping to find that photo of the Panama City 1980 studs from the wall at Olde Tyme Grocery's site, but alas, no luck. There is a gallery though, but I couldn't tell if any of the photos were of Get Naked Murph. It would be cool to do a "Where Are They Now?" of everyone from that picture. I started working an some pages for Dana Smith a while back. Dana did a lot of the flyers, t-shirt designs, zines, etc. that are on the Lafayette areas of this site. The site isn't really done, and I would really like to get some shots of his more recent artwork, but anyway the site is here.

Men In Black, Wayward Youth, The Normals photos, and a temporary Airline 61 site

I dumped some photos from the Men in Black site into folders on the band pages. Men in Black stuff is here and Wayward Youth photos and stuff is here. I also made a folder for photos of The Normals. I got most of the Normals stuff from the old Airline 61 site via the Wayback Machine at archive.org.

I rebuilt the Airline 61 site on tripod here so that the Normals pages are still accessible (they have a lot of good information) and also so that Steve H has a site for the record label in the meantime. (Note: some of the links are dead, and I couldn't recover all of the images and graphics.) Airline 61 carries releases from The Normals, Lump, and it looks like Eugene Chadbourne. I haven't rebuilt the Lump pages yet, but I intend to when I get a chance so that there is at least a web presence for Lump. I'm hoping that the New Orleans compilation project that we've been working on will generate some interest in the Lump and Normals records that Steve has.

I've been working on putting up the old Airline 61 site on tripod.com for Steve H. Airline 61 Records had The Normals, Lump, and Eugene Chadbourne. The Normals were one of New Orleans' first punk bands and are probably the most highly regarded. Lump was previously called The Black Problem, after a remark by whoever that racist sheriff is. Harry Lee maybe? I've been getting the pages off of the wayback machine. Check out some of this cool stuff they had for the Normals:

Men in Black have put up downloadable versions of all of the music from their "Burning Fast" cd on this page. They've been around since the late 70's, and their music is really diverse. Really uncategorizable, but very good. I love all the crazy freak-out keyboards. Recommended are Stages of Your Life, Burning Fast, and Goose Boogie. I also like Lackeys a lot. Hearing bands like Men in Black, The Normals, The Skinnies, Shitdogs, Zoomers, Toxin III, Our Favorite Band, etc. makes me really appreciate how diverse the Louisiana scene was. They also have a lot of photos on this page, including photos of Wayward Youth, with who they were closely connected. There are also two Wayward Youth tracks available at this site. They're definitely worth checking out. (Especially El Mundo.)

Sorry for the lack of updates, things have been pretty crazy here. Here are some Toxin III graphics that Chris sent. They're from their Vinyl Solution EP. (1981 I think?) Vinyl Solution was a punk label out of New Orleans. 'Lectric Eye was another one. Both graphics are copyright 1982 by Ray Weiland.

The New Orleans underground compilation project is rolling along pretty well. So far we've gotten permission from Die Rotzz, The Normals, A Particularly Vicious Rumor, Burnversion, The Zydepunks, The Tea Sea, One Man Machine, The Other Planets, The Cold, Egg Yolk Jubilee, Hazard County Girls, Men in Black, R. Scully, Charm City Brokers, Wayward Youth, Lump, and Rotary Downs. We're going to burn a preliminary version of the comp with twelve tracks that we have already so we can hit some of the benefits this weekend. We plan on being ready with the full version (18 to 20 tracks) for the following weekend. Here's a page about it that Scott put up: nolacomp.tripod.com . There are links to the bands' various pages from there if you feel like checking them out.

Mike Vallely in Lafayette, late 80's

Pictures of Mike Vallely in Lafayette from John Morrow. The first is at John Wayne, and the others are from Surf-n-skate.

Just for the record, John Wayne was a 10 or 11 foot blue vert ramp with a mini next to it on John Wayne Dr. off of Kaliste Saloom. It was owned by Chad Simon, and was home to the SMP (Southern Metal Posse). Surf-n-skate was the local skate shop in the late 80's and was on Guilbeau. It had a street course outside and a mini ramp inside. It was owned by Ms. Donna? (think that was her name.) When Surf-n-skate closed, they sold some of the stuff to some guys with a little park in Baton Rouge. They sawed the mini in half across the flat and took half of it back with them. Me, Jenkins, and some other fools borrowed a flatbed trailer, scavenged the other half of the ramp and whatever was left of the street course and dropped it off in my parents' driveway. Needless to say, I didn't tell them I was bringing it, and it sat there forever until they were ready to kill me. I eventually got around to ripping it apart and built the old ramp on Lafayette Street out of it and parts of Thomas Couvillion's old ramp. While I was ripping the Surf-n-skate mini apart, I found that someone had written "J.P. SUCKS" on the underside of the plywood layer all over the place (looked like when they built it.) J.P. was one of their sponsored ams. Legend has it that he squanked Ms. Donna. But you ain't heard that from me, because I AIN'T ONE TO GOSSIP.

Fiddycentdraft site maintenance

I did a bunch of maintenance on the site. I uploaded all of the recently received flyers to the Lafayette flyer page, Baton Rouge flyer page, and the New Orleans flyer page. I linked all of the ones for Lafayette bands to their entries on the Lafayette band index page. Scans of zines are now in this Village Photos folder. Band related photos are now on Image Cave. Click here to see all of the different band related photos. Bands that I had a lot of stuff for have their own separate folders. These folders are also linked to the individual band entries on the Lafayette band index page. Miscellaneous band photos are under the folder named "Band_stuff". Skate photos are moved over to Zorpia, and they are split into Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans folders. I also made a folder for photos of people we know called "Peeps". A lot of the stuff that was previously dumped in the misc Ripway folder is now there. Finally the photos of clubs and whatnot are in this Yahoo folder. There are also some misc photos of shows in NYC and a folder with photos from Tickle Dracula shows (my band) here. I did all this to spread the material around to different sites so there's room to grow. The Ripway account was maxed out. I'm just mainly going to use it to store all of the flyers now. Anyway, all of that moving may lead to some dead links somewhere, so if you find any, let me know.

Two photos of Heith Copes. I would kill for one of those Eppic Eddie Gomez's that he's skating in the first photo where he's doing the wallie. I had a couple of those. In the second photo at the park in downtown Lafayette, I believe that's a pre-hippy-hair Heith. (Now he has edumacated hair.)

Tony Magnusson at Mt. Taco. In the first photo, that kind of looks like Al Gibson on the deck maybe? I don't remember where Mt. Taco was exactly. It was somebody's backyard I think.

Jeff Phillips at the Sugar's ramp. That is Greg Melancon holding the coping down. (This photo is from Margaret.) Sugar's was where Mako's was later. This photo is looking out towards the house on the corner of McKinley and Jefferson with Nitecaps and The Keg on either side. It's still weird to think that there was a vert ramp on the strip.

These two photos are from a jam in Opelousas. I think it was held in the big ex-grocery store east of I-49 at the Cresswell exit. That building later became a flea market. The first is Mike Vallely and the second is Rodney Mullen.

These flyers are from John M. REM at the Saenger Theater in New Orleans, Lydia Lunch at some place on Magazine in New Orleans, Gene Loves Jezebel at USL in Lafayette, three from Combined Effort in Baton Rouge - two Blitzkrieg/Otis fliers and one Otis/Piece Core. I couldn't really remember, but Chris said Blitzkrieg was essentially Piece Core with a different name. I think Sidney Fontenot put on the Gene Loves Jezebel show. Anybody know where that firehose flyer is from? Was Power Tools a club or a band? I'll have to ask John.

Faith No More photos from 1987

Here are the photos John put up of Faith No More at Sidney's house in 1987. I'm not totally sure on the details of this show, but I think what happened was Sidney Fontenot booked Faith No More to play at a place in Lafayette called Pappa P's way out on Johnston across from Giles. Then something happened where the show couldn't be held there, he couldn't find anywhere else in time, and they had to play at his mom's house. At least that's what I've been told. I'm sure Morrow, Jenkins, Chris, or Margaret can clarify. Anyway, it must have been a killer show. The last photo is from New Orleans. From the looks of it, I would wager that it was at Howlin' Wolf.

John Morrow put some more stuff up at Zorpia. Some really great band related stuff like flyers (mostly Lafayette), photos of Faith No More in Sidney Fontenot's house, etc. I haven't had time to do it yet, but I'll add the flyers to the flyer archive and link them to the bands on the index pages. There are three Otis flyers, two with Blitzkrieg (who I'd forgotten about), firehose, etc. Check them out here. He also put up some killer photos of pro skaters at various spots in Lafayette. Check them out here. Mike Vallely, Rodney Mullen, Tony Mag, Gator, etc. Great stuff.

Liz at WFMU played a bunch of Louisiana stuff last Tuesday. The playlist is here. She played Die Rotzz, The Transmission, The Smites, Rare Avis, Urbosleeks, The Zoomers, Toxin III, and Frigg-a-go-go. I know the material is heavily weighted towards Lafayette stuff, but it's because at the time Scott and I made the cds we gave her, we didn't have much New Orleans and Baton Rouge stuff. I do now, and I'm going to get it to Liz, Pat Duncan, and Terre T at WFMU, and also Ivan and Cecil at KRVS. Probably some others too. Also I talked to Bernard from One Man Machine and he said that he got a call from KVRX in Austin about his music. I had sent copies of the stuff I gave Liz to KVRX, KRVS, KLSU, WTUL, and some others a while back. I really didn't expect that the out of state stations would pay much attention to it, so it's cool to hear that not only did somebody at KVRX actually listen to it, but they were interested enough to look up and contact Bernard.

Nola benefit comp

We've been working on putting together a compilation of New Orleans underground bands to benefit Katrina relief efforts. Basically our idea is to get permission from about 20 bands, burn the cds ourselves, print decent looking cd labels and inserts at Kinko's, assemble them, and sell them at the various benefits here in NYC (there are a lot scheduled) and also on consignment at record stores, coffee shops, etc. 100% of the proceeds will go to Katrina relief. If anyone knows contact info for New Orleans underground bands, please email me. I think that this project could earn a decent amount of money for the cause and also promote the South Louisiana underground scene.

Toxin III, Snufflix, and Reality On Trial graphics

Check out these badass band graphics that Chris Cart sent. Except for the Reality On Trial dinosaur one, they were all done by Chris's friend Ray Weiland. I saw that he was heavy into underground comics, so it must have been him in this California Comics issue. That would be interesting to see.

Toxin III were without a doubt Lafayette's best known punk band. Thanks to Hyped To Death and Raveup Records, they've had quite a resurgence. Check out some Toxin III photos here. You can also listen to their music here.

Snufflix was Chris's next band. I wonder if they ever released this EP. I'll have to ask him. Check out this photo of Toxin III and Snufflix together. Also, this flyer.

Sorry about skipping days between posts, but I've been really busy. Here are more of John's photos.

Sal Barbier at Surf-n-Skate. This was when Surf-n-skate was located on Guilbeau. This was probably when he was a sponsored am for H-street.

Kelly Van Eaton, Dana Smith, Jason Perkins (?), and maybe George Blake and Brett Drake? It's from 1987. Greenbriar ditch is the only transitional ditch in Lafayette that ever dries out. I probably should put transitional in quotes.

Josh Chappel at the Pizza Playhouse quarter. That was a ramp built in the unused part of a shopping center behind the old Pizza Playhouse on Kaliste Saloom. I think Louis built it. That same shopping center had some shitty bar that Smiley was always making me go to. I can't remember the name of it now. Maybe Bob's Pub? Anyway, weird place for a ramp. It's surprising it survived so long.

Kelly Van Eaton, Rob Dobbs, and Ursula Atkinson. I think Ursula lives in Washington state now. Don't know what happened to Rob. Kelly's an architect in Chicago.
